Emotional Struggles

“It’s absolutely terrifying the kind of deep suffering the happiest looking people are able to hide inside themselves-Nikita Gill

Isn’t it so sad that when we are going through the darkest times of our lives , the people who we think would be there for us..aren’t. We live in such a cruel society, full of mean, miserable, hateful individuals. There is almost no humanity left. But when an individual commits suicide society is always the first to say, “there were no signs” “they seemed so happy” etc.

So many individuals, especially young people, are crying for help, but no one is listening. When you’re constantly being hit with statements like ” what do you have to be sad or stressed about? You don’t have any problems”. Then you get hit with the “somebody is going through worse than you” statement. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are always others going through worse than you (if you look at it from the outside). However, it is almost impossible for one to know what you’re feeling emotionally because people deal with things differently, even when circumstances are similar.

There are also individuals who have a predisposition to mental illness. Nowadays it seems like everybody is depressed or facing some type of emotional struggle. The truth is, it has always been common, but people are just more educated and aware, and most of all more comfortable to share their struggle.

One of the things I observed while living overseas is how other races are so quick to go to therapy/ stick their kids in therapy or have them diagnosed and medicated. I used to feel so uncomfortable with that. But, even if they go overboard at times; at least they are taking action. Mental health has been such a taboo in the the Caribbean (specifically Jamaica) and while progress has been made in recent years, the level of awareness is still extremely low and we really need to work on that.

Honestly, it pisses me off when everyone becomes so aware and concerned with mental illnesses as soon as a celebrity commits suicide, but if it’s a regular person they are condemned and seen as a disgrace. When will we learn to support our own?

Guys, this is cliché but check on your people… even if they aren’t in your “circle” ask how they’re doing and mean it. Be kind, it takes more energy to be hateful and malicious. Everyone is dealing with something and your kindness may just save a life.
